Calix is seeking a highly motivated, talented and technically strong engineering manager to provide leadership to our Premises software group in our Minneapolis office.  You not only have strong technical abilities, but you are a proven team leader that leads by example in a small team based collaborative environment. You will have a key role in effectively leading the team and inspiring others to achieve goals through innovation, quality and excellence.


Your team will have a key role in continuing our relentless pursuit of delivering the highest quality of premises equipment integrating residential and business services directly into the homes and businesses of consumers. Our products are Linux-based with residential gateway, VoIP, IPTV, cloud management, SDN, GUI, WiFi and Ethernet OAM capabilities fully integrated on platforms that deliver from 1 Gbs to 10 Gbs services.  Our CPE devices run embedded Linux with multi-core processors, line rate switching and embedded technologies from optical drivers to the latest in wireless.


Our team has broad responsibility for all aspects of bringing state-of-the-art software and hardware together from low-level embedded software to front-end user interfaces. We offer a great work environment with the opportunity to be involved in every aspect of product delivery from design and implementation through test and large-scale field deployment. You will manage all the operational aspects of the software development team to ensure business and product objectives are met. Provide administrative, technical, and people leadership for multiple, diverse, and potentially geographically distributed teams. You are responsible for providing feedback to the team and individuals on their performance.


This position will directly manage a mix of junior and senior software engineers through all life-cycle aspects of feature and product development and support.  This role has a number of aspects:

  • Provide technical guidance during the product definition, design, and implementation phase of a project.
  • Analyze current and strategic requirements, coordinate resources and direct the projects in the right direction in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate development activities between teams in Minneapolis and China
  • Build and motivate technical teams by developing staff to achieve goals through innovation, quality and excellence
  • Encourage team interaction, boost employee motivation and appreciate team contribution
  • Ability to manage change, delegate and allocate responsibilities efficiently to manage projects end to end
  • Perform performance reviews and mentor staff to facilitate professional growth as well as identify strengths and weaknesses of team members and make changes as required
  • Ability to match project tasks with opportunities for development so that employee potential is utilized to the maximum



  • BS in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent. MS preferred.
  • Ten years of applicable engineering experience in embedded telecommunications systems
  • Experience leading engineering teams
  • Excellent people skills
  • Excellent project management skills (use of Microsoft Project Plan tool an asset)
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Experience leading virtual or remote teams
  • Experience with embedded line unit SW an asset
  • Experience with Ethernet and/or IP services and protocols an asset
  • Willingness for some travel required

  • Experience in embedded network management domain (SNMP, TR69, Netconf, Yang), including carrier class provisioning, surveillance, modelling, and scale
  • Familiarity with the various network management standards (IETF, MEF, IEEE)
  • Exposure to various modelling techniques and driving management solutions from those models
  • Experience with User Interfaces and Usability aspects
  • Experience in working with 3rd party stack vendors as well as integration partners
  • Good understanding of SDN in the management domain (Openflow, Openstack, NFV)
  • Proven ability to work across cross functional teams to deliver end to end management solutions
  • C, C++, XML, Java, Web GUI experience
  • 10+ years’ experience in software development of carrier class networking products
